According to Mexico’s Ministry of Health, the country is experiencing a notable rise in pertussis cases, with more than 13 cases reported per week. Since mid-August 2024, over 160 cases have been documented nationwide, marking a significant increase in the average incidence. The states of Baja California and Chihuahua have been particularly affected, reporting 26 and 20 cases, respectively. While the outbreak has now peaked, it remains a public health concern.
To protect against pertussis, all adult travelers should receive one dose of Tdap (adult acellular pertussis-containing vaccine) every 10 years, provided they previously completed an adequate primary vaccine series. For individuals over 65 years old, or those with immunocompromising conditions or underlying lung disease, a booster dose should be considered if it has been at least three years since their last Tdap vaccination. Although this is an off-label recommendation, it offers additional protection in these high-risk groups.
