According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), there have been 18 confirmed cases of yellow fever (YF) reported since January 2024. All cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals, resulting in nine fatalities. These cases have been documented across several regions in Peru, with San Martín reporting the highest number at 10 cases, followed by Junín with three, Madre de Dios with three, and Huánuco and Ucayali each reporting one case.
In light of this outbreak, we recommend vaccination for travelers aged 9 months and older who are heading to specific areas of concern. It is crucial for unvaccinated individuals to avoid these affected areas to minimize their risk of contracting the virus.
Moreover, all travelers are urged to take precautionary measures against insect bites, as mosquitoes that transmit yellow fever can bite at any time of the day. However, it is essential to note that these mosquitoes exhibit peak activity during the early morning, late afternoon, and evening. By following these guidelines, travelers can better protect themselves while exploring affected regions.
