Travelling while pregnant is becoming increasingly common. For the pregnant traveler, there are numerous pregnancy-specific illness and guidelines to be aware of: certain vaccinations are contraindicated during pregnancy, malaria is uniquely dangerous during pregnancy, Zika virus infection during pregnancy is associated with birth defects, there are other travel specific infections that are high risk during pregnancy including listeria and toxoplasmosis. The pregnant traveler is also at increased risk for blood clots while traveling. Lastly, access to medical care abroad for obstetrical needs may be limited. Despite this intimidating list, with the assistance of our travel medicine specialists, travel while pregnant can safely be pursued to many international destinations until approximately 30 weeks gestation.
