Since early December 2024, an increase in respiratory illnesses in China, primarily affecting the northern provinces, including Beijing. This surge has been confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and China’s Ministry of Health. The rise in cases is attributed to a combination of known respiratory pathogens such as adenovirus, bocavirus, common coronaviruses, enteroviruses, human metapneumovirus, influenza virus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus, and SARS-CoV-2.
To protect against these illnesses, travelers are strongly advised to remain up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, particularly for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Preventive measures like proper hand hygiene are crucial. Travelers should wash their hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are unavailable.
In addition to vaccinations and hand hygiene, other protective practices are recommended. Travelers should consider wearing a well-fitting N95 or K95 mask, particularly when using public transportation or visiting transportation hubs. Physical distancing and avoiding crowded settings—such as shopping centers, movie theaters, and stadiums—can further reduce the risk of exposure. These precautions are especially important for individuals at higher risk of severe illness, including those aged 65 or older, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying heart or lung conditions or compromised immune systems.
