Vietnam is currently seeing a large rise in measles cases. These cases are most concentrated in and around Ho Chi Minh City. Since January 2024, more than 2,000 cases have been reported, with over 200 confirmed by laboratory tests. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has reported over 390 cases, and unfortunately the outbreak has yet to peak.
For travelers expecting to visit the affected areas soon, we recommends the following: If you’re 12 months old or older and were born in 1957 or later (1970 or later in Canada and the UK; 1966 or later in Australia) and haven’t had measles or received 2 doses of the MMR vaccine in your life, get 2 doses of the MMR vaccine, spaced at least 28 days apart, before departure. Infants aged 6-11 months will require 1 dose of the MMR vaccine. For travelers born before 1970 (in Canada) and who don’t have proof of immunity or a previous dose of measles vaccine, you need 1 dose of the MMR vaccine.
